Historic Decision for Kalymnos: Former Gendarmerie Building Granted to the Dodecanese Technical Chamber
In a decision of significant symbolic and developmental importance, the Kalymnos Municipal Council unanimously approved, during its meeting on June 9, 2026, the terms for granting the historic former Gendarmerie building in Chorio to the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) – Dodecanese Department.
The matter was introduced as an off-agenda item and received unanimous support from the Council, highlighting the broad consensus surrounding the future utilization of the landmark property.
The proposal was presented to the Council by Antonis Giannikouris, Secretary General of the Dodecanese Technical Chamber, and the President of the Permanent Committee of TEE Kalymnos, Sakellaris G. Tsikouris, who outlined the objectives and opportunities arising from the transfer of the building to the Chamber.

During the discussion, emphasis was placed on the importance of cooperation between the Municipality of Kalymnos and the Dodecanese Technical Chamber, as well as on the potential use of the building for scientific, technical, educational and community-oriented activities that could contribute to the island’s development.
Council members unanimously endorsed the proposal, demonstrating a shared commitment to the productive use of municipal assets and the strengthening of institutional presence on Kalymnos.
The decision marks an important step toward the restoration and future utilization of one of Chorio’s historic buildings, opening new prospects for development and community engagement on the island.
