On Monday, October 27th at 7:00 PM, the Kalymnos Regional Unit, the “Ai Mousai” Reading Society, and Gutenberg Publishing organized a special commemorative event in Kalymnos to mark the launch of Dr. Konstantinos G. Tassa’s book:
“The Last Hero of the Legendary Destroyer ADRIAS L-67 – Giorgos Tassa”
Held at the “Ai Mousai” Reading Society, the event shed light on the history of the renowned WWII destroyer ADRIAS and one of its youngest and most heroic crew members, Giorgos Tassa.
On October 22, 1943, ADRIAS struck a German naval mine near Kalymnos. Despite losing its bow, under the determined leadership of Commander Ioannis Toumbas and the crew’s extraordinary bravery, the vessel managed to reach the Turkish coast and safely run aground at Gümüşlük the following day. The explosion claimed the lives of 21 sailors and wounded 30 others, including five from Kalymnos—two of whom died heroically.
Speakers included:
Admiral (ret.) Kosmas Christidis
Diver Konstantinos Thoktaridis
Captain Spyridon Alexiou
