The sea is like love:
you step into it, never knowing whether you’ll come back out.
How many have lost their youth—
fatal dives, deadly descents,
cramps, sinkholes, hidden rocks,
whirlpools, sharks, jellyfish.
Woe to us if we stop swimming
simply because a handful have drowned.
Woe to us if we betray the sea,
for it has its own ways of swallowing us whole.
The sea is like love:
a thousand delight in it—
one pays the price.
