Greece Expands List of “Untouched” Beaches Under New Ministerial Decision
Greece’s Ministries of Environment and Finance have updated the list of so-called “untouched” beaches with a decision issued on April 24, 2026, strengthening protection measures for environmentally sensitive coastal areas.
These beaches are part of the Natura 2000 network and are subject to strict regulations aimed at preserving their ecological balance. Under current legislation, the granting of beach-use rights is prohibited, including activities such as the installation of sunbeds and umbrellas, the operation of beach bars or kiosks, and the use of water-based recreational equipment.
Additionally, any activity that could threaten the natural morphology or ecological integrity of these areas is banned. This includes the presence of motorized vehicles, the organization of events involving more than ten people, and the use of music, loudspeakers, or sound amplifiers.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the inclusion of new beaches in the list aims to ensure the effective protection of areas with significant aesthetic, geomorphological, and ecological value, while preserving habitats and species of flora and fauna found there.
The updated framework increases the number of coastal zones within the national Natura 2000 list where any form of commercial use or potentially harmful activities is strictly prohibited.
The Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA) plays a key role in defining these areas, proposing updates to the list, and providing expert opinions to the relevant ministries.
