Speaking from Cyprus, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described the situation in Iran as “appalling,” calling the killing of young people a human tragedy.
She declined to comment on the actions of other countries, but stressed that the European Union is considering further tightening sanctions against Iran. According to her, these measures are effective, have a real impact, and help weaken the regime while increasing pressure.
During a press conference following a meeting between the College of Commissioners and the Cypriot Cabinet, she underlined that sanctions can contribute to political change and reaffirmed the EU’s full political support for the Iranian people, who are “bravely fighting for change.”
Finally, she stated that the EU intends to move forward with sanctions against individuals and entities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
