Water Scarcity at Rhodes Water Dialogues
KALYMNOS – RHODES, Greece – Water security and the growing impact of climate change on island communities were at the center of discussions during the “Rhodes | Water Dialogues” event, where the Mayor of Kalymnos delivered a strong message on the urgent challenges facing Greece’s islands.
The conference, themed “Water Scarcity and Flooding in Island Greece,” brought together government officials, scientists, local government representatives, and institutional stakeholders to discuss sustainable solutions for managing water resources amid increasingly extreme climate conditions.
Addressing the gathering, the Mayor of Kalymnos stressed that water is not merely an infrastructure issue for island communities but a fundamental requirement for social cohesion, economic development, and quality of life.
He highlighted the growing pressures experienced by island municipalities, particularly during the peak tourism season, and called for both immediate and long-term measures to address water shortages and climate-related risks.
The Mayor also emphasized the need to accelerate water infrastructure projects, improve funding flexibility, and invest in modern and sustainable technologies such as desalination. He further noted the close connection between water management and energy policy, describing both as key challenges for the future of island regions.
The participation of the Municipality of Kalymnos in the Rhodes Water Dialogues reflects its ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable development, responsible natural resource management, and greater resilience against the challenges posed by climate change.
