New Study Reveals Daily Challenges and Unmet Needs
A new field study conducted by the organization WHEN has shed light on the everyday realities faced by women in Kalymnos, highlighting challenges related to public services, social expectations, gender stereotypes, and limited opportunities for personal and professional development.
The findings are part of the eighth installment of WHEN’s nationwide research project focusing on women living in regional and island communities across Greece. The study was based on three workshops held in Kalymnos, bringing together 25 women who shared their experiences, concerns, and aspirations for the future.
Participants identified inadequate care services, limited access to healthcare, the pressure of balancing family and work responsibilities, and persistent gender stereotypes as some of the most significant barriers affecting their daily lives.
“We can’t stop running—we’ve become used to it. It’s as if we were born to work,” one participant remarked, reflecting the intense demands many women face on the island.
Despite these challenges, the research also revealed a strong willingness to drive change. Participants proposed the creation of support networks, educational initiatives, cultural programs, and stronger cooperation with local authorities to transform women’s needs into sustainable policies and improved infrastructure.
The findings were presented during a public event in Kalymnos attended by local residents and community representatives, sparking discussions about equality, participation, and the future of women’s empowerment in island communities.
