MEPs have voted in favour of the first-ever programme dedicated to the European defence industry (EDIP). The initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s industrial and technological base in the defence sector and to enhance the EU’s overall defence capabilities.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (Renew, Germany), Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE), stated that “the European Defence Industry Programme marks an important step towards a more efficient, faster, and genuinely European approach to defence procurement.”
Raphaël Glucksmann (Socialists, France), co-rapporteur of the SEDE committee, stressed that in the face of Russian aggression, the EU “must reinforce its joint defence systems and capabilities.”
François-Xavier Bellamy (EPP, France), co-rapporteur in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), noted that the programme represents “a significant step forward for the security of the European continent and the development of our defence industry.”
The new legislation must now be approved by the Council.
