Vouvalis Mansion Set for Revival as Restoration Study Receives Approval
A major step has been taken towards safeguarding and promoting Kalymnos’ cultural heritage, following the Greek Ministry of Culture’s approval of the restoration and enhancement study for the historic Vouvalis Mansion.
The decision clears the way for a project of considerable historical and cultural importance, with a total budget of €850,000. The project has been included in the South Aegean Regional Development Programme 2021–2025 and aims to restore, protect and showcase the emblematic neoclassical building.
Vouvalis Mansion is much more than an important architectural landmark. It is a living part of Kalymnos’ history, closely associated with the island’s prosperous sponge-diving era and with Nikolaos Vouvalis, one of its greatest benefactors. Through his business and philanthropic activities, Vouvalis left a lasting mark on the island’s economic, social and cultural development.
Once completed, the project will preserve and revive an important monument of Kalymnos’ modern history, allowing future generations and visitors to discover a defining chapter in the island’s past.
Mayor of Kalymnos Giannis Mastrokoukos expressed his warm thanks to South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos for promptly securing the necessary funding, as well as to the Ministry of Culture for approving the required restoration study.
The Municipal Authority stated that it would continue supporting initiatives which preserve and promote the historical and cultural identity of Kalymnos through projects that honour the island’s past while creating valuable opportunities for its future.
