Kalymnos Citrus Support Included in Audit
A regular financial audit is underway to examine the legality and compliance of agricultural subsidies granted through the special support schemes for Greece’s Smaller Aegean Islands.
The audit, which will continue until 25 September 2026, covers support for traditional olive groves, Chios mastic production, vineyards and citrus cultivation. The citrus scheme includes Chios and Samos, as well as the regional units of Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kos and Rhodes, placing the Dodecanese firmly within the scope of the review.
The audit is being conducted by a three-member team appointed by Greece’s Financial Audit Committee. Petros Vachamidis serves as coordinator, alongside team members Garyfalia Mavrou and Konstantinos Papadimitriou. The audited authority is the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, particularly its General Directorate for Audits, Support and Payments.
On-site inspections will take place from 7 to 10 September at selected farms and agricultural plots in the Chios Regional Unit. A separate four-day administrative review will subsequently be carried out in Athens.
The process carries added significance as it represents one of the first major tests of the new system governing EU agricultural subsidies following the transfer of the relevant payment and management responsibilities to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue.
For citrus growers in Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kos and Rhodes, the outcome is especially important. The uninterrupted payment of support depends on a reliable and fully compliant management system, as any shortcomings could lead to financial corrections with wider consequences for the island subsidy schemes.
