The former Prime Minister steps down from Parliament, signaling a new political movement — Who is expected to follow him
On October 6, Alexis Tsipras submitted his resignation as a Member of Parliament to the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, just hours before the opening of the new parliamentary session.
The former Prime Minister and long-serving MP for 16 consecutive years announced his departure, effectively opening the way for the creation of a new political formation under his leadership. In a detailed statement, Tsipras explained the reasoning behind his decision:
“I resign because I cannot and do not wish to hold the office of MP, with all the privileges it entails, when I feel that my presence — especially under the title of former Prime Minister — contributes nothing substantial to those who once trusted me.”
He continued:
“I cannot and do not want to merely participate in a Parliament which, stripped of its democratic substance — primarily due to the majority’s responsibility — is unable to fulfill the role dictated by the Constitution and demanded by the people. I resign as an MP for SYRIZA, but I do not resign from political action. I leave the safety of the parliamentary benches and aspire to return to the hopeful uncertainty of social engagement.”

A number of key political figures — closely associated with Tsipras’s journey within SYRIZA — are expected to support his new venture. Among them:
