The President of ANEK, Dimitrios Maragos, issued a detailed and strongly worded response to a letter and media statements by former board presidents Georgios Thanatsis and Ioannis Diamantis. Maragos accuses them of hypocrisy and falsehoods concerning their 2024 complaint, which led to his being summoned by judicial authorities. He stresses that what they called a “notification” was, in legal terms, a formal criminal complaint, as confirmed by the case file and the actions of the Prosecutor and the Judge.
Maragos clarifies the procedure for appointing ANEK’s legal counsel, rejects claims of irregularities and states that the company’s lawyer consistently sought the conviction of all defendants. He also accuses the former presidents of political and procedural manoeuvring, noting that Mr. Diamantis testified in court in support of the former employee—despite originally being listed as a witness for ANEK.
Furthermore, Maragos points to serious responsibilities borne by the former presidents during their tenure, including the sinking of Kalymnos Star in 2020, a maritime accident involving Nissos Kalymnos in 2022, and the first-instance conviction of Mr. Diamantis for election tampering in 2019 (while acknowledging the presumption of innocence pending appeal).
The letter concludes in a firm tone, criticizing the former officials for what he describes as persistent audacity and misrepresentation.
Georgios Thanatsis sent his reply to the President of ANEK’s letter of 3-12-2025 to our newspaper as follows:
“Mr. Maragos,
Tell the person who wrote the letter for you that “Silence is Golden”.
And that goes for you as well.
G. Thanatsis”
