G. Pappas in Parliament: Improvements to Transport Bill with Focus on Island Regions
Dodecanese MP of New Democracy, Ioannis (Giannis) K. Pappas, addressed the Hellenic Parliament during the plenary session discussing the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport’s bill on the modernization and upgrading of the transport sector.
In his speech, Mr. Pappas highlighted the crucial role of transport in ensuring public safety, supporting economic activity, and maintaining social cohesion, stressing that it is a sector requiring continuous and effective state responsibility.
He placed particular emphasis on professional taxi drivers, acknowledging their essential contribution to daily transportation needs, especially in island regions, where they provide round-the-clock, reliable services to both residents and visitors.
The MP also referred to the provision allowing pre-booking services for private passenger vehicles with drivers, describing it as a modern tool that can enhance market organization and improve service quality. However, he stressed the need for clear and specific regulations within the bill itself to avoid ambiguity and ensure fair market balance.
As he noted, defining a specific time limit for pre-booking is a key element in preventing misinterpretations, protecting professionals, and ensuring smooth operation, particularly in local island communities.
Concluding, Mr. Pappas stated that the overall direction of the bill is positive, strengthening safety, oversight, and organization in the transport sector, while also referring to recent government initiatives aimed at supporting society and the economy.
