Powerful Messages from Kalymnos
The inauguration of the new Emergency Department (ED) at Kalymnos General Hospital delivered strong messages on both healthcare improvements for Greece’s island communities and Greek-American relations, with Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, Shipping Minister Vasilis Kikilias, U.S. Congressman Gus Bilirakis, and other officials attending the ceremony.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the new Emergency Department, noting that the project was designed three years ago and launched during the tenure of then Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias. He emphasized that the new facility represents a significant upgrade to healthcare services for the residents of Kalymnos and the surrounding islands.
Addressing the hospital’s staffing, Mr. Georgiadis announced that three of the seven recently advertised physician positions had been successfully filled. He described this as a major achievement, pointing out that similar recruitment efforts had often failed in previous years due to a lack of applicants.
One of the highlights of the event was the participation of Florida Congressman Gus Bilirakis, who is of Kalymnian descent. According to the Health Minister, Congressman Bilirakis reaffirmed his commitment to continue advocating in the U.S. Congress and expressed confidence that the United States would not proceed with the transfer of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.
The inauguration underscored both the importance of strengthening healthcare infrastructure on Greece’s border islands and the enduring ties between Kalymnos and the Greek-American community, represented by one of its most prominent members in the U.S. Congress.
