Kalymnos Climbs Again: International Climbing Festival Restarts & Tourism Ambitions Rise
Kalymnos, a unique island in the Dodecanese, is reviving its International Climbing Festival from October 16–19, 2025. The island, globally known for its exceptional climbing rocks, is repositioning itself as a year-round destination focused on sustainable tourism. The festival will include climbing activities, cultural events, workshops, and culinary experiences that highlight the island’s traditions and gastronomy.
Deputy Mayor Popi Koutouzi emphasizes that while climbing is Kalymnos’ main asset, gastronomy, sponge diving, and marine tourism are also key pillars of the island’s economy. The island attracts climbers mainly from Central Europe and the US, especially in spring and autumn, avoiding peak summer heat. However, limited connectivity, especially in off-season months, remains a challenge, as the island lacks international charter flights.
Local professionals, including award-winning chef Michalis Marthas, aim to promote Kalymnian cuisine using local ingredients and traditional recipes with a modern twist. Signature dishes like baked chickpeas, meat-filled dolmades, and sponge divers’ preserved meats enrich the island’s culinary identity.
Municipal leaders stress the importance of quality over quantity in tourism, advocating for visitors who respect the environment and local culture. Investments in infrastructure, such as marinas, thermal baths, and transport links, are key goals to enhance the island’s tourism potential while preserving its authentic character.
