Konsolas’ intervention at the Regional Growth Conference
The need to closely connect Regional Universities with the economic and social development of local communities was highlighted by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Regions and Dodecanese MP, Manos Konsolas, during the 14th Regional Growth Conference held in Patras from May 19 to 21, 2026. Konsolas presented a comprehensive set of proposals aimed at strengthening the role of universities as centers of innovation, research, and regional development.
In his speech, Manos Konsolas stressed that Regional Universities should not operate independently from local community needs, but instead evolve into “development pillars” for every region. He outlined three strategic priorities: expanding research and innovation activities, developing local and regional growth plans, and adopting a new approach to economic and social progress.
He also proposed the creation of “University Knowledge Regions,” where universities, local authorities, chambers of commerce, and productive sectors would cooperate in designing regional development initiatives. Particular emphasis was placed on establishing a Regional Development Observatory and launching local programs to reverse brain drain by encouraging graduates and researchers to remain in or return to regional areas.
Furthermore, Konsolas suggested the implementation of “Learning Voucher” programs for lifelong education, as well as the establishment of a special funding mechanism titled “University and Island Innovation,” aimed at supporting circular economy initiatives, blue economy projects, and digital transformation in island regions.
