The Coordinator of the Secretariat for Children’s Rights of New Democracy for the Dodecanese, Ms. Katerina Emmanouil, visited the Leros Closed Controlled Facility last week, aiming to assess the living conditions and the procedures in place for protecting the rights and safeguarding the interests of unaccompanied minors.
During her visit, in addition to becoming familiar with the interior and exterior areas of the Centre, she had a substantive discussion with the Director, Ms. Triantafyllia Kyprizoglou, on matters related to the Centre’s operation and was informed about key issues.
Given the significant decrease in migration flows compared to last year, the Centre currently hosts 14 unaccompanied minors (aged 14–17), while the number of minors accommodated with their families exceeds 250.
For all preschool-aged children, there is a public kindergarten operating inside the facility, while older children are enrolled in the island’s public schools according to their educational level.
This particular facility functions as a Reception and Identification Centre, not as a hosting centre. Once the identification process is completed, migrants are transferred to the mainland or, if granted international protection, they can choose where to live.
Unaccompanied minors are usually transferred to dedicated child accommodation centres or other suitable housing arrangements. Their care is provided by the NGO “Zevxis” under the supervision of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
