Mutually Accepted Solution for the Issue of Public Space Concessions in Symi from the Ministry of Culture to Local Professionals
The issue that has arisen in Symi regarding the concession of public spaces from the Ministry of Culture to local shops and professionals, who are now facing exorbitant fines, is being brought to light through a parliamentary intervention by Dodecanese MP Mr. Manos Konsolas, directed to the Minister of Culture.
The MP points out that the Ministry’s services are demanding the removal of awnings and shades. At the same time, professionals are being threatened with excessive fines based on the square meters of public space used, even though no similar issue had arisen in the past.
“No one is opposed to maintaining certain regulations and order,” Mr. Konsolas emphasizes, “but these must result from consensus, agreement, and cooperation between the Ministry of Culture, the local government, and the professionals.
At this critical time—during an ongoing tourist season—the economic and social life of the island must not be disrupted, tourism must not be affected, and dozens of businesses and professionals must not be driven into a dead end.”
He proposes the formation of a working group made up of representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Symi, and the local business community, which will work toward a mutually acceptable agreement that everyone will commit to—choosing the path of dialogue and consensus.
