Major Boost for Agathonisi: Three State-Owned Properties to Be Transferred for Housing Teachers and Doctors
A significant step towards strengthening public services on the remote island of Agathonisi has been set in motion, as three state-owned properties are to be transferred to the municipality for the construction of housing for teachers and doctors serving on the island. The development follows a parliamentary initiative by Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas.
According to the official response from the Minister of National Economy and Finance, the Dodecanese Public Property Service has issued a positive recommendation for the transfer of the three plots. The case has already been forwarded to the Ministry’s Directorate of Public Property, with the final transfer to be completed through a joint ministerial decision by the Ministries of National Economy and Finance and Interior.
Mr. Konsolas also noted that he has requested funding through the National Development Programme so that the Municipality of Agathonisi can proceed with the construction of residential units that will be allocated to public servants working on the island.
He stressed that the presence of teachers at the island’s primary and secondary schools, as well as doctors and nursing staff at the local Regional Medical Centre, is essential for maintaining the island’s population and ensuring its social and economic vitality. He argued that strong incentives are necessary to attract public-sector professionals to remote islands of strategic national importance.
The press release also recalls that, under the Ministry of National Defence’s housing programme, the first residential units for Armed Forces personnel serving on Agathonisi have recently been completed, further strengthening the island’s infrastructure and resilience.
