Restoration works have commenced on the project titled “Restoration of Facade Sections of the Kalymnos Regional Unit Building,” concerning the historic Prefecture building in Pothia, one of the island’s most emblematic landmarks. The building has been officially designated as a preserved historical monument by the Ministry of Culture (Government Gazette 1021/Β/06-12-2001).
The interventions focus on restoring the exterior facades, aiming to preserve the building’s architectural identity and protect it from wear caused by time and weather conditions. The study was prepared by the Technical Department of the Kalymnos Prefecture, which is also supervising the project to ensure scientific accuracy and respect for the monument’s historical character.
The project is part of a broader effort to aesthetically and functionally upgrade the building. Previous interventions have included the restoration of heraldic emblems, maintenance of the traditional pebble mosaic courtyard, tile repairs, and ongoing preservation works in both interior and exterior areas.
The initiative underscores the commitment to safeguarding a building that remains a living symbol of Kalymnos’ administrative history and collective memory.
