Dodecanese MP of New Democracy, Manos Konsolas, has called for the activation of European Union Regulation 105/2008 in order to impose an embargo on Turkish fishery products originating from illegal fishing activities within Greek territorial waters. The request was submitted through a parliamentary intervention addressed to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.
According to Mr. Konsolas, provocations by Turkish fishing vessels in the Dodecanese region have intensified recently. He stated that Turkish fishing boats are not only illegally operating within Greek territorial waters, but are also threatening Greek fishermen, while Turkish coast guard vessels have allegedly engaged in intimidation tactics against Greek fishing boats.
The Dodecanese MP stressed that these incidents are taking place not only in Greek waters but also within European maritime territory, which, as he argues, justifies the activation of EU Regulation 105/2008. The regulation stipulates that only fishery products certified as legally sourced may be imported into European Union member states.
At the same time, Mr. Konsolas called for stronger reinforcement of the Hellenic Coast Guard and Port Authority forces in the Dodecanese islands in order to safeguard Greek fishermen and ensure legality and security in the region.
The press release also notes that the full text of the parliamentary intervention addressed to Minister Vasilis Kikilias regarding the illegal activities of Turkish fishing vessels and provocations by the Turkish coast guard has been attached.
