Interim Waste Management Solution Officially Begins Operation
Kalymnos has entered a new chapter in environmental management with the launch of its interim waste management solution, a milestone that municipal authorities describe as the beginning of the end for decades of environmental degradation and outdated waste disposal practices.
In its official statement, the Municipality of Kalymnos says the new system marks a decisive step toward restoring environmental compliance, protecting public health and improving residents’ quality of life. The municipality acknowledges that implementing the project was a long and challenging process, facing strong opposition and numerous obstacles, but stresses that the public interest and environmental responsibility ultimately prevailed.
The municipality emphasizes that the interim solution is not the final destination but a crucial transitional stage leading to a permanent, modern waste management system. The statement also echoes comments by South Aegean Solid Waste Management Agency (FoDSA) President George Hatzimarkos, who has repeatedly argued that long-standing waste management problems on the islands can only be solved through careful planning, determination and cooperation.
Concluding its announcement, the Municipality thanks everyone involved in making the project a reality, stating that Kalymnos is leaving behind a past that did not reflect the island’s potential and is building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for its residents and future generations.
