Russia’s attack on Ukraine has brought back to the forefront the urgent need to facilitate the rapid cross-border movement of troops across Europe, MEPs stress. In the resolution they adopted, they underline that military mobility is a key pillar of common European security and defence.
Co-rapporteur Petras Auštrevičius (Renew, Lithuania) stated that in order for Europe to maintain its strength and its ability to deter attacks, it is crucial to demonstrate readiness in practice.
For his part, co-rapporteur Roberts Zīle (Conservatives, Latvia) highlighted that military mobility has become even more urgent in light of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.
MEPs from the Committees on Security and Defence (SEDE) and Transport and Tourism (TRAN) will now shape their negotiating position on the military mobility package presented by the European Commission. A recording of the plenary debate is available online.
