MP Manos Konsolas met with the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Tsafos, to discuss the Islands Decarbonisation Fund, which holds over €1 billion in available resources through 2032.
The Fund can finance projects such as renewable energy installations and storage systems, interconnections between islands and the mainland, hydroelectric projects and dams, electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, offshore floating wind farms, shore-side electricity for ships and alternative-fuel infrastructure, photovoltaic systems for households, businesses, municipalities and airports, as well as the energy needs of desalination units.
Konsolas described the Fund as a major opportunity for Greek islands to achieve energy self-sufficiency, become models of sustainable development, and reduce energy costs for residents and businesses. The Ministry plans to submit its proposal dossier to the European Commission by the end of 2025, with resources coming from the auctioning of 25 million CO₂ emission allowances.
These funds are expected to leverage up to €4.4 billion in private investment and complementary EU financing tools.
