A New Era for Kalymnos Port: €15.28 Million Secured for Major Projects and a €3 Million Plan for Pothia
Major port infrastructure projects worth a combined €15.28 million, along with a funding proposal of approximately €3 million for the redevelopment of Pothia’s seafront, have been presented by the Municipal Port Fund of Kalymnos as it responds to public debate over the awarding of technical studies and services.
In a press release issued on August 4, 2026, the Municipal Port Fund stated that contractors were selected not on the basis of where they were located, but according to their technical specialization, proven experience and ability to deliver the required studies without delay.
The authority stressed that these decisions should not be interpreted as criticism or a devaluation of Kalymnian engineers. According to the statement, the priority was to accelerate procedures that had remained pending for years, bring major projects to maturity, secure the necessary permits and take advantage of available funding opportunities.
Major projects and funding
The Municipal Port Fund highlighted the following developments:
- €1,659,151 secured for the recovery and removal of shipwrecks and decommissioned vessels.
- €501,000 secured to upgrade security systems at the port facility in line with Schengen requirements.
- The port’s traffic and spatial planning study is nearing completion.
- A funding proposal worth approximately €3 million is being prepared for the redevelopment of Pothia’s seafront.
- €13.12 million approved for the construction of a new ferry ramp outside the Port of Kalymnos, following a programme agreement between the Municipal Port Fund and the South Aegean Region.
The authority also noted that local professionals and businesses continue to participate in a number of important projects and services whenever the nature of the work allows.
Call for institutional cooperation
The statement places particular emphasis on the role of the Technical Chamber of Greece and the contribution of Kalymnos’ scientific and engineering community. The Port Fund said it remains open to cooperation and invited the submission of documented proposals concerning the management and improvement of port operations, the technical upgrading and licensing of facilities, port safety and environmental protection.
“The objective of the Municipal Port Fund is clear: to advance the necessary studies without delay, make use of every available funding opportunity and implement projects that upgrade port infrastructure and create added value for Kalymnos,” the statement concludes.
The press release was signed by the president of the Municipal Port Fund of Kalymnos, Michail Plastis.
