Concern has been raised over a social media post by a prominent Turkish defence analyst who allegedly urged Turkish citizens to organise actions intended to cause damage in the Megisti island complex.
The allegation was reported by retired Hellenic Air Force officer Spyridon Kissas in an article published by militaire.gr. Kissas described the analyst as a mouthpiece for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
According to the report, the Turkish analyst referred to an incident on Kastellorizo on September 26, 2020, when the large Greek flag painted on the island was partially covered with red paint.
In the controversial post, the analyst reportedly claimed that ordinary Turkish citizens could organise an operation and cause damage on Megisti if they wished to do so. He also referred to the alleged use of drones during the 2020 incident, claiming that the operation was carried out without being detected.
The statement represents an especially provocative and potentially dangerous intervention, as it appears to go beyond inflammatory rhetoric by encouraging private individuals to undertake illegal actions on Greek territory.
Kastellorizo and the wider Megisti island complex frequently feature in Turkish revisionist rhetoric. Statements of this nature risk undermining regional security and efforts to maintain calm relations in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.
