The week that passed in Kalymnos was filled with activity, public works, and events that left their mark — some bright and positive, others not so much.
The Positives definitely outweigh the negatives
️Opening of the Agios Stefanos Playground.
A small-scale project of great value. Playgrounds are spaces of life, joy, and community for children — and the smiles of the young Kalymnians at the opening were the best possible reward.
️Alkistis Protopsalti concert
An evening filled with light, music, and emotion. Alkistis’ voice brought people together under the Kalymnian sky, reminding us that Art still has the power to unite and uplift.
️On-site inspection and measures against dangerous rock formations.
The Municipal Authority, in collaboration with specialized engineers, showed a sense of responsibility toward a serious safety issue. The inspections in Agios Vasileios, Langá, and the Windmills of Chrysocheria mark a step toward prevention.
️Start of asphalt paving on the Gaidourorachos – Panorama road.
It may cause some temporary inconvenience, but it is a project of substance. Infrastructure is the backbone of everyday life, and every such improvement enhances citizens’ quality of living.
️Maria Magkoulia – Aegean Shot Put Champion.
Another outstanding achievement for our own Maria! With perseverance, discipline, and integrity, she once again lifted Kalymnos to the top of the podium. She reminds us that determination and effort still bring pride and hope to our island.
The Negatives
️ Recycling Awareness Event in Kalymnos.
An event that could have been the starting point for real environmental awareness ended up failing to engage the public. The low attendance and lack of concrete commitments showed that recycling, sadly, remains more theory than practice. We need less talk and more action — otherwise, the island will continue to be environmentally backward.
️ General Assembly of ANEK Shareholders.
Another meeting filled with postponements, ambiguities, and unanswered questions about the future of the island’s ferry connection. Citizens and business owners are tired of hearing the same vague promises. ANEK remains vital for Kalymnos’ social and economic life — serious planning, transparency, and decisive action are now more necessary than ever.
There were, however, some encouraging signs, as a local media report from the assembly noted visible financial stabilization within the company. Yet, the decision not to discharge the previous Board of Directors from financial responsibility raises the possibility of future legal claims by the current Board. Finally, the biggest unanswered question remains: what happened to the new vessel that was meant to replace the sunken Kalymnos Star?
After a capital increase was approved specifically for its completion and payment, where is the new ship?
NoFilter… The Takeaway
Kalymnos is moving forward — but it still needs to learn how to combine action with participation, projects with transparency, and good intentions with measurable results.
The current Municipal Authority could be described as fortunate, having managed to secure partnerships that support its initiatives.
The Agios Stefanos Playground and Alkistis Protopsalti’s concert were both sponsored by Minerva Marine, a noteworthy collaboration between the local government and the private sector.
In addressing the issue of dangerous rock formations, the Municipality is essentially following the groundwork laid by the previous administration.
And for the Gaidourorachos–Panorama road paving, it relied on the valuable assistance of the Regional Unit of Kalymnos.
The positive developments of the week show potential and direction.
The negatives, however, remind us that nothing truly changes if we remain passive, or if we settle for “events that lack active participation.”
Progress without responsibility simply does not exist; that responsibility belongs to all of us — citizens, authorities, and institutions alike.
