Private laboratory doctors in Kos have issued a press release warning that they are facing economic collapse and professional uncertainty, calling for immediate government intervention to ensure the survival of their laboratories.
According to the statement, there had recently been a genuine willingness on their part to rejoin the national healthcare organization EOPYY system, as discussions had included measures such as reducing the claw-back mechanism, applying it at regional and prefecture levels, and implementing prescription and monitoring protocols. However, they state that none of these measures has been effectively implemented to secure the viability of their practices.
The doctors also report that additional financial burdens linked to retroactive claims from 2023 have now been imposed, creating new debts for laboratories. In Kos, these charges reportedly amount to between €5,000 and €8,000 per month for each laboratory, with the total burden approaching €800,000.
They emphasize that the examinations in question were properly carried out for insured patients, while the laboratory doctors never received full compensation for their services. According to the statement, the situation is leading “with mathematical certainty” to financial suffocation, while young doctors are abandoning the specialty due to the lack of professional prospects.
The laboratory doctors are calling on the Greek state to abolish the claw-back mechanism and erase what they describe as an artificially created debt that they did not generate. They warn that without sustainable laboratory medicine, there can be no reliable diagnosis and, consequently, no effective healthcare system.
