PEMEN and STEFENSON Unions Denounce Conditions on “KALYMNOS” Ferry – Crew Unpaid for Two and a Half Months
Serious allegations regarding violations of the Collective Labor Agreement for coastal shipping workers and the abandonment of the crew aboard the ferry “KALYMNOS” were made in a joint press release issued by the PEMEN and PEKPMEN “STEFENSON” maritime unions.
According to the statement, on May 7, 2026, a STEFENSON delegation visited Neos Molos of Drapetsona and found that the passenger and vehicle ferry “KALYMNOS,” owned by the Anonymous Shipping Company of Kalymnos and currently in dry dock, has a crew that has remained unpaid for approximately two and a half months.
The unions further allege that the company has failed to provide even basic necessities, including food supplies for the crew, describing the situation as abandonment of the seafarers. They are demanding:
- immediate payment of all outstanding wages,
- decent living conditions for the crew,
- and an end to what they describe as the “deplorable abandonment” of the workers.
In the press release, the maritime unions also accuse the company’s management of attempting to evade responsibility and of using intimidation tactics against crew members, including alleged threats of dismissal and blacklisting.
The unions are also calling on the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to intervene immediately in order to stop what they describe as employer arbitrariness and the systematic violation of the Collective Labor Agreement in coastal shipping.
The case has sparked strong reactions both in Kalymnos and among maritime workers, as the “KALYMNOS” ferry is considered an important vessel for inter-island transportation in the region.
