Two years after serious issues were highlighted regarding the Fire Service of Kalymnos (5 January 2024), critical problems concerning the operation and readiness of the island’s Volunteer Fire Station remain unresolved.
According to current data, the Volunteer Station has not been upgraded to a Fire Brigade Unit, resulting in a lack of sufficient permanent personnel. This situation undermines the sense of safety for residents, visitors, climbers, and hikers, especially during periods of increased activity and risk.
It is also noted that the previous commander, following a promotion, was no longer able to serve at a Volunteer Station and has since been transferred away from Kalymnos, creating a gap in leadership.
It is emphasized that only through coordinated action by all relevant authorities can these issues be effectively addressed, as isolated efforts have so far failed to deliver tangible results.
With the fire prevention season and the climbing season both beginning in April, there is an urgent need for swift and targeted measures to ensure the protection of the island and those who visit it.
The reminder and intervention were issued by Manolis Volos, Regional Councillor of the South Aegean with the political group Open Horizons in the South Aegean.
