“The Port Remains Dangerous” – Fresh Call for Immediate Dredging Before an Accident Occurs
KALYMNOS, June 14, 2026 – Concerns over navigational safety at Mastichari Port have been raised once again following a letter sent by Kalymnos tourism representative and businessman Vassilios Psarompas to the President of the Kos Municipal Port Fund.
The letter follows the release of recent bathymetric survey data, which, according to the sender, confirms earlier warnings regarding the shallow depths of the port and the risk of vessel groundings.
Mr. Psarompas argues that even smaller passenger vessels are now forced to avoid operating when weather conditions exceed 5 Beaufort, whereas previously services could continue in winds of up to 7 Beaufort. This situation, he says, is negatively affecting Kalymnos tourism by causing travel disruptions, missed flights and unplanned overnight stays in Kos.
Particular concern is expressed over the vessel “OLYMPIOS ZEUS,” which is expected to resume operations next week under increased operational risk and significant weather restrictions.
The letter also highlights the impact on excursion boats that traditionally operated from Mastichari, many of which have either suspended operations or altered their routes, resulting in substantial financial losses.
According to the correspondence, dredging procedures were reportedly ready to begin approximately twenty days ago, prompting questions about the reasons for the delay.
“The problem remains and the risk of a maritime accident is still present,” the letter states, urging the Municipal Port Fund to accelerate the dredging works without further delay.
Copies of the letter were sent to ferry operators ANEM, ANEK and LAFASI NE, tourism organizations in Kalymnos and local media outlets.
