The Board of Directors of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) met in a tense atmosphere on Wednesday, marked by sharp exchanges between KEDE President Lazaros Kyrizoglou and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
The conflict arose over a failed agreement on a joint resolution. Despite the disagreements, the board approved a proposal for a symbolic closure of all town halls on December 19, one day before the state budget vote, and a protest gathering outside Parliament.
Several members expressed disappointment over the division within local government and called for unity ahead of the extraordinary general assembly on December 17, where the new Local Government Code will be discussed.
