On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Political Secretariat of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance (SYRIZA-PA) met and unanimously approved the following positions:
- Government Critique: SYRIZA strongly criticized the New Democracy (ND) government under Kyriakos Mitsotakis, highlighting six years of alleged corruption, mismanagement of public funds, undermining of the rule of law, and foreign policy failures. They call for political change and strengthening of SYRIZA-PA to bring justice and democracy back to governance.
- OPEKEPE Scandal: SYRIZA denounced the misuse of EU agricultural funds for vote-buying and enriching associates of ND. They criticized the government’s decision to set up a broad inquiry (starting from 1998) as a tactic to blur responsibilities. SYRIZA has submitted a formal request for a Preliminary Investigative Committee focused on former ministers Voridis and Avgenakis, citing serious legal violations.
- Opposition Cooperation: SYRIZA collaborated with the New Left party on this proposal, emphasizing the importance of progressive alliances. They criticized PASOK-KINAL for distancing itself from such collaborations, accusing it of political isolation and false equivalencies between ND and the progressive bloc.
- Migration Crisis: SYRIZA accused the ND government of being unprepared for the new migration crisis, using far-right rhetoric to cover its failures. They rejected the EU’s new Migration Pact and criticized the asylum policy suspension law. SYRIZA opposed the creation of a large, closed refugee facility in Crete and called for EU-wide reforms and sanctions against countries exploiting migration politically.
- Party Reorganization: After a successful 5th Congress and election of new leadership bodies, SYRIZA-PA is proceeding with a full organizational and political reboot. Preparations are underway for the Thessaloniki International Fair and for engaging with citizens on issues like inflation, housing, healthcare, and labor rights.
- Portfolio Assignments: The Political Secretariat assigned members specific responsibilities, ranging from health, justice, economy, and foreign affairs to youth, digital policy, and migrant rights. Leadership roles include President Sokratis Famellos and other key officials.
- New Appointment: Kostas Morfidis was appointed Director of Personnel and Material Resources.
The overall tone emphasized urgency for political change, organizational renewal, and clear progressive opposition to the current government.
