In his interview with nonpapers.gr, SYRIZA–PS leader Sokratis Famellos calls the reported assault by an MEP on a journalist in Belgium “unacceptable” and says he moved immediately to remove the person from SYRIZA–PS’s European Parliament group and to trigger party disciplinary procedures, stressing that violence is incompatible with the Left’s values.
He acknowledges past mistakes in candidate selection—especially choices driven by popularity or “lifestyle” logic—and argues for restoring seriousness and credibility in politics by refocusing on progressive principles, science, intellectual life, and younger people. He describes today’s opposition landscape as fragmented, while insisting that citizens are demanding concrete answers on the cost of living, incomes, health, education, agriculture, justice, and transparency.
His core message is the recomposition and unity of the broader progressive camp (notably with PASOK and New Left) so that it produces not just coordination, but a credible governing proposal capable of winning elections and delivering a “Progressive Greece.” On speculation about a possible Alexis Tsipras initiative, he rejects a competitive framing and argues that any development should serve convergence and avoid further fragmentation.
Finally, he calls 2026 a pivotal year to achieve a unified progressive response. He criticizes the EU as politically failing and urges a renewed European agenda centered on peace, institutions, and values. He reiterates that he did not enter politics “for the chair,” but to achieve political change and improve people’s lives.
