The European Parliament is set to decide whether to request an opinion from the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on the compatibility of the EU–Mercosur agreements with EU Treaties. The move follows the planned signing of the association and interim trade agreements in Paraguay.
If approved, the request would trigger a legal review by the CJEU, a necessary step before ratification by EU member states and the Parliament. At the same time, the plenary will debate and vote on a motion of censure against the European Commission over its handling of the Mercosur agreements.
The debate on the motion of censure is scheduled for 19 January, with votes on the CJEU opinion request on 21 January and on the motion of censure on 22 January.
