The first phase of the tender process for the development of Waste Recycling and Recovery Units on the islands of Kos and Kalymnos has been completed, with participation from major Greek construction groups (GEK TERNA, AKTOR, AVAX, METKA, and HELECTOR).
The project will be delivered through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), valued at over €110 million, with a 27-year term (2 years for construction and 25 for operation), aiming to manage 46,238 tons of waste annually. The PPP includes the design, financing, construction, maintenance, and operation of the facilities. It is 80% publicly funded.
Two separate plants will be built — one in Kos (with a landfill) and one in Kalymnos. The project is expected to significantly improve waste management and eliminate illegal landfills, especially in Kalymnos.
