Prime Minister of Greenland: Greenland Needs the EU and the EU Needs Greenland
Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen became the first leader of Greenland to address the European Parliament.
Welcoming Mr. Nielsen, Roberta Metsola emphasized that “the European Parliament will always stand by the people of Greenland and their right to choose their own path, and to defend their territorial integrity.”
In his speech, the Greenlandic Prime Minister stated that “Greenland needs the European Union, and the European Union needs Greenland,” thanking the EU for its strong support during difficult times.
He highlighted the potential for further strengthening cooperation in areas such as:
- Mining, since Greenland holds 24 of the 34 minerals the EU has classified as critical,
- Renewable energy, due to the country’s hydroelectric potential,
- Bridging the digital divide,
- Youth education, and
- Sustainable tourism.
He also stressed the importance of trade relations, particularly concerning fish and shellfish.
