Dodecanese MP of New Democracy, Manos Konsolas, has brought to Parliament the issue of funding and tendering for the construction of the new Airport–Rhodes road axis (Mediterranean alignment), submitting specific questions to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.
Konsolas is seeking clarifications regarding the financing plan and implementation timeline of the project, as well as whether it will be tendered as a single project or in separate sections. He also raises the possibility of financing through the European Investment Bank, which had previously shown interest.
He emphasizes that the project is of critical importance, as it will ease traffic congestion on the island and improve access to and from Rhodes International Airport. He also recalls that successive political leaderships have acknowledged its necessity, along with a commitment from the Prime Minister.
The project involves the construction of a modern, safe highway of approximately 9 kilometers, including five junctions and a parallel road network of around 16 kilometers.
According to Konsolas, key preparatory steps have already been completed, including a cost-benefit study, while the Region of South Aegean and the Municipality of Rhodes are working to finalize the necessary studies within 2026.
He notes that the project, with a budget exceeding €70 million, will not only improve infrastructure but also release private properties that have remained restricted due to previous planning frameworks.
