OPEKEPE Fraud: Greece Launches Recovery Plan for Illegal Subsidies – Top Beneficiaries First
The Greek government has launched a targeted recovery plan to retrieve illegally obtained agricultural subsidies issued through OPEKEPE. Authorities will begin investigations with the highest-earning tax IDs (AFMs), aiming for immediate administrative recovery and criminal prosecutions.
The Financial Police and Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will lead the cross-checking process. The case is politically sensitive, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has pushed for swift and decisive actions against those involved.
Greece has already been fined €415 million by the European Commission, which will be reclaimed in three installments via reductions from future CAP payments (2025–2027). The government claims that regular beneficiaries will remain unaffected due to the removal of fraudulent entries.
