The decision approving the project for sustainable micromobility through shared bicycle systems sets a clear implementation timeline until 31 December 2029 and specifies the public funding allocated to each beneficiary municipality.
The project is fully financed by public and EU funds, with a total budget of €35,277,664.68 and no private contribution, and is included in the Public Investment Programme. It covers 118 municipalities nationwide and includes 233 sub-projects, with each municipality required to implement at least one.
In the Dodecanese region, four municipalities are included with the following allocated public funding:
- Rhodes Municipality: €441,996.28
- Kos Municipality: €317,930.56
- Kalymnos Municipality: €255,931.80
- Leros Municipality: €241,900.55
A key provision of the decision is that the shared bicycles must be offered free of charge, openly and without discrimination throughout the equipment’s economic lifetime, a condition that must be clearly stated in each municipality’s operating regulation.
The project also includes digital platforms and applications for user access, system management and data monitoring, along with the necessary software and hardware infrastructure. For the islands of the Dodecanese — where mobility is affected by seasonality, tourism pressure and limited road networks — the scheme may function as a practical tool to ease congestion and support sustainable daily transport.
