Following yesterday’s press release by Deputy Mayor of Health and Welfare, Mr. Georgios Choullis, regarding the withdrawal of his proposal for the long-term lease of a plot intended for the construction of a basketball court—and in which he directly names Mr. Georgios Mavros, indirectly blaming him for the project’s failure—Mr. Mavros called a local press briefing to respond.
It is worth noting that during a previous press conference on July 19, 2025, when our newspaper asked about the basketball court issue, Mr. Mavros stated that the municipal coalition’s decision on the matter had been rejected. His response at the time is recorded on video.
However, during today’s press briefing, Mr. Mavros revealed that the relevant decision was never even submitted to the Decentralized Administration for approval. This raises serious questions:
- Did the Municipal Authority ever intend to implement the basketball court project, as it failed to forward the decision for approval?
- How could Mr. Mavros claim the decision had been rejected if it was never officially submitted to the authority responsible for such a rejection?
- Why is the Municipal Authority now indirectly blaming Mr. Mavros for the failure of the project, when it had submitted a proposal allegedly full of legal irregularities?
- Was a promise made by Mayor Mastrokoukos to Mr. Choullis before the elections—one that could not realistically be fulfilled—in order to secure his support as a candidate?
These questions remain open.
